1689 Confession · Chapter 15
Of Repentance unto Life and Salvation
Chapter 15 confesses that repentance unto life and salvation is an evangelical grace, the doctrine whereof is to be preached by every minister of the gospel as well as that of faith in Christ. By it a sinner — out of the sight and sense not only of the danger but also of the filthiness and odiousness of his sins — does, by faith in Christ, humble himself for them with godly sorrow, detestation of them, and self-abhorrence, with purpose and endeavor to walk with God in all the ways of his commandments.
Repentance is not just sorrow for being caught. It is sorrow that hates the sin itself, not merely its consequences. And it is sorrow that turns — from the sin and to Christ.
The Reformed Baptist preaches repentance and faith together, never apart. They are the two hands of the soul reaching for Christ.
