1689 Confession · Chapter 18

Of the Assurance of Grace and Salvation

Chapter 18 confesses that true believers may in this life be certainly assured that they are in the state of grace, and may rejoice in the hope of the glory of God — which hope shall never make them ashamed.

Assurance is not the essence of faith, but it is a possible — indeed, often expected — fruit of mature faith. It is founded on the divine truth of the promises of salvation, the inward evidence of those graces unto which these promises are made, and the testimony of the Spirit of adoption witnessing with our spirits that we are the children of God.

The Reformed Baptist does not consider assurance a luxury. It is the settled enjoyment of the gospel that should mark every believer who has been long under the means of grace.
