1689 Confession · Chapter 19

Of the Law of God

Chapter 19 confesses the moral law of God — summarized in the Ten Commandments and ultimately in the two great commandments to love God and neighbor — as binding on every human being in every age. It is not the way of salvation; Christ alone is that. But it is the rule of life for the justified.

The Reformed Baptist holds the threefold use of the law: it shows us our sin and drives us to Christ; it restrains the unconverted; it guides the redeemed in the way of holiness.

The ceremonial and judicial laws of Old Testament Israel were of typical purpose and are now abrogated. But the moral law abides — written on the heart at creation, summarized at Sinai, perfectly obeyed by Christ on our behalf, and now the rule of life for the believer.
