1689 Confession · Chapter 3
Of God's Decree
Chapter 3 confesses God’s eternal, unchangeable, wise, and holy decree by which he has freely ordained whatever comes to pass. This includes the predestination of some to eternal life through Christ — to the praise of his glorious grace — and the passing by of others for the praise of his justice.
The 1689 holds firmly to election while affirming creaturely freedom and moral responsibility. God’s decree does not violate the will of the creature; it secures the certainty of all that comes to pass without making God the author of sin.
This chapter is one of the doctrines of grace — God chooses; man does not earn. It is offered as a comfort to believers, not as a topic for speculation. The elect are known by their faith and repentance; the rest are warned and called to Christ.
