1689 Confession · Chapter 5

Of Divine Providence

Chapter 5 confesses that God, having made all things, upholds, directs, disposes, and governs them — from the greatest to the least — by his most wise and holy providence. Nothing happens by chance. Even the free actions of creatures fall under his sovereign and gracious control.

This chapter teaches the Reformed Baptist to live in confident dependence on the providence of God. No suffering, no setback, no perplexity is outside his rule. The smallest event of our days is governed by the same hand that hung the stars.

Providence is the antidote to anxiety. The Christian who knows the doctrine of providence knows that nothing comes from a stranger’s hand. Everything that comes to him comes from his Father, and is for his good.
