1689 Confession · Chapter 8

Of Christ the Mediator

Chapter 8 confesses the person and work of Jesus Christ — the only Mediator between God and man. He is the eternal Son of God, who in the fullness of time took to himself man’s nature, with all the essential properties and common infirmities thereof, yet without sin. He fulfilled the law, suffered death on the cross, was buried, rose again, ascended into heaven, and now intercedes for his people.

This is the heart of Christianity. The 1689 follows the historic Nicene and Chalcedonian definitions of Christ’s person — two natures, divine and human, perfectly united in one person forever. No other religious or philosophical figure can stand in his place.

Christ’s threefold office as Prophet, Priest, and King governs the whole Christian life. As Prophet he teaches us, as Priest he saves us, as King he rules us.
