Exposition of Colossians
The letter to the Colossians is short — four chapters, about 1,600 words in Greek — but it contains some of the most exalted writing about Jesus Christ in all of Scripture. “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation” (Col. 1:15). “For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily” (Col. 2:9). To work slowly through Colossians is to be reset in our view of who Christ is and what he has done.
This study works verse by verse through Colossians, with attention to its original setting (a young church facing pressure from various forms of religious error), its theological riches (the supremacy of Christ), and its practical implications (how Christ’s lordship reshapes life, marriage, parenting, work, and prayer).
How to Use This Study
For maximum profit, read the chapter of Colossians yourself before each lesson. Listen with your Bible open. Take notes. Then read it once more after the lesson, with the teaching fresh in mind. The most ordinary practice of any Christian — reading the Bible slowly, alongside good teaching — is also the most spiritually fruitful.
