1689 Confession · Chapter 27

Of the Communion of Saints

Chapter 27 confesses the communion of saints: all saints united to Christ have fellowship with him in his grace, sufferings, death, resurrection, and glory. Being united to one another in love, they have communion in each other’s gifts and graces, and are obliged to the performance of such duties — public and private — as conduce to their mutual good, both in the inward and outward man.

This is the New Testament’s koinonia — the active, daily, sacrificial sharing of life among the saints. It is not optional fellowship; it is a means of grace.

In practical terms: bearing one another’s burdens, confessing sins to one another, hospitality, financial assistance in time of need, mutual prayer, and the ordinary acts of love that mark a healthy congregation.
