1689 Confession · Chapter 29
Of Baptism
Chapter 29 confesses that baptism is an ordinance of the New Testament ordained by Jesus Christ. It is to be a sign — unto the party baptized — of his fellowship with Christ in his death and resurrection, of his being engrafted into Christ, of remission of sins, and of his giving up unto God through Jesus Christ to live and walk in newness of life.
Those who actually profess repentance toward God, faith in, and obedience to our Lord Jesus Christ, are the only proper subjects of this ordinance. The way and manner of the dispensing of this ordinance is by immersion or dipping of the person in water.
This is the Reformed Baptist’s distinctive: believer’s baptism by immersion. See our article comparing believer’s and infant baptism.
