1689 Confession · Chapter 4
Of Creation
Chapter 4 affirms that God in the beginning was pleased to create or make the world and all things therein — visible and invisible — in the space of six days, and all very good. He made man in his own image, with a reasonable and immortal soul, endued with knowledge, righteousness, and true holiness.
The doctrine of creation matters because everything that follows depends on it. The world is not eternal, not self-generated, not the product of chance. It is the work of a sovereign Creator who made it for his own glory and pronounced it good.
Mankind in particular was made for communion with God — a creature whose distinct dignity is the image of his Maker. This is the basis for the Christian understanding of human worth, the family, work, marriage, and ethics.
